In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Techiman North, Hon. Johnson Kwabena Adom, held a strategic engagement with executives of the Tuobodom Federation of Tomato Growers on Monday, 5th May 2025.
The high-level discussion focused on:
- Enhancing tomato production through modern farming techniques
- Improving market access for local farmers
- Increasing revenue generation through value addition
- Implementing Local Economic Development (LED) initiatives
Hon. Adom reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to agricultural development:
“This meeting marks our renewed partnership with tomato growers. Through collective effort, we’ll implement interventions that will make our generation proud and transform Techiman North into an agribusiness hub.”
Farmers raised pressing issues including:
- Post-harvest losses due to inadequate storage facilities
- Exploitation by middlemen in the value chain
- High cost of quality inputs (seeds, fertilizers)
- Need for mechanization support
The Assembly pledged to Facilitate access to affordable inputs through farmer cooperatives, Establish aggregation centers to improve market access, Train farmers on post-harvest management and value addition and Link growers to institutional markets (school feeding, hospitals).
The DCE announced plans to Incorporate tomato farming into the district’s LED strategy, Seek partnerships for processing facilities and Organize regular farmer forums for continuous engagement.
Closing Remarks
Hon. Adom commended the farmers’ resilience and assured them:
“Your concerns are now our action points. My office will work with relevant departments to implement these solutions within the next quarter.”
The Federation’s Chairman, Mr. Yaw Boateng, welcomed the interventions:
“For the first time, we feel truly heard. We’re ready to work with the Assembly to transform our industry.”
Hon. Johnson as outline some plans to help establish a cordial relation with the farmers by forming a technical working group (Farmers + Assembly), Development of implementation roadmap (June 2025) and First progress review meeting (August 2025)
