Empowering Youth Female Farmers in Tomato Production

The Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Harnessing Agricultural Productivity and Prosperity for the Youth (HAPPY) project through Technoserve, successfully conducted a training program for youth female farmers in the district. The training focused on:

  1. Tomatoes harvesting, sorting, and grading
  2. Tomato processing

Objectives and Impact
The training aimed to address post-harvest losses, a significant challenge faced by tomato farmers in the district. With tomatoes being a major produce in the area, the training was crucial in enhancing the profitability of the tomato business. A total of 80 youth female farmers from major producing areas within the district benefited from the program.

Training Details

Training Details

  • Duration: 5 days (2 days for harvesting, sorting, and grading; 3 days for processing)
  • Logistics provided: Aprons, Wellington boots, hand gloves, protective clothes, etc.
  • Certificates awarded: Participants received certificates in tomato processing to facilitate their activities

Outcomes
The training is expected to improve the skills and knowledge of youth female farmers in tomato production, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase the profitability of the tomato business in the district.
