The erratic nature of rainfall patterns lately is one of the challenges affecting farmers vary hugely, hence the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has taken upon itself to educate farmers on the need to be prudent enough to be smart on the weather to be able to maximize yield, especially during the minor season.
It is upon this that farmers in the Techiman North District were taken through field demonstrations at Asuyie to encourage them to see and adopt the technology.
FIELD DEMONSTRATIONS: After preparing the demonstration fields for the following locations; Grotto, Mesidan, Akonkonti Road and Buoyam S.H.S, planting were done respectively on 10/09/2019, 12/09/2019, 14/09/2019 and 14/09/2019. Again, the following maize varieties were selected: Grotto, Omankwa; Mesidan, Oba 98; Akonkonti Road, Omankwa and Buoyam S.H.S, Oba 98.
Fertilizer was applied appropriately on the following dates at the different locations; Grotto, 22/10/2019; Mesidan, 24/10/2019; Akonkonti Road, 22/10/2019 and Buoyem S.H.S, 25/10/2019.
ACHIEVEMENTS: The demonstrations were successful since all participants appreciated and developed an interest in the technology used. They promised to practice it in the following season.
CHALLENGES:
• Acquisition of land by the roadside.
• Poor germination of the seeds given especially the Hybrid.
• Since there is grass cover on the field, Pest (crickets, millipedes, FAW, etc) attack is very high.
