As a matter of need, every organization: be it government or non-governmental and which is in the going concern must be organizing workshop training for their staff to be abreast with time and the changing global phenomenon. It is in view of this that the NADMO staff of Techiman north has undergone a workshop training programme under the theme: ‘CAPACITY BUILDING FOR STAFF ON CORE MANDATE OF NADMO AND REPORT WRITING’.
Reports and records have shown a number of occasions where people attend promotional interviews and cannot express themselves with certain terminologies that play pivotal role in their organizations. And so if staff cannot understand some overriding terminologies, then their practical operations on the job may be questionable.
A recent similar workshop training programme was organized in June 2021 for both existing and newly recruited disaster volunteer groups (DVGs) but this particular workshop targeted the other segment of the staff which is office staff, zonal offices, NADCO trainees and national service personnel. It was aimed at building their capacity on the job as well as preparing them for any subsequent promotional interviews.
The workshop’s purpose was to equip staff and revive them of their roles as collaborators and duties and responsibilities under the various roles.
The workshop was organized by the district NADMO staff management team led by Mr Samuel Agyei Effah, the District Director’s authorization was by the Brong Ahafo regional secretariat and was supported by the Techiman north district assembly.
The study was agreed to cover some types of hazards in Ghana, the concept of disaster management, disaster risk management and the disaster management cycle.
The scope of the training was in accordance with the terms of reference agreed upon by the Brong Ahafo regional secretariat and included report writing.
Two officials from the NADMO regional secretariat facilitated the study, Sunyani led by Mr Alfred Atta Yeboah (regional operations in charge).
It took place the hours of 10:00 am and closed at 3:20 pm, at the mini-conference room of the Techiman north district assembly, Tuobodom
Some of the highlights covered, “the types of hazards in Ghana:
- Natural hazards:
- Geological(tremors, earthquakes, landslides)
- Hydro-meteorological(floods, windstorm, rainstorms, drought)
- Pest and insect infestations(anthrax, armyworm, black fly, larger grains borers
- Fires and lightening(bushfires)
- Disease epidemic disasters(CSM, cholera, yellow fever)
- Man-made hazards
- Fires(domestic, industrial and commercial)
- Technological disasters(aviation accidents, marine accidents, boat/lake accidents, collapse of buildings, terrorism, radiological, oil spillage)
It also highlighted the three phases of the disaster management cycle:
- Pre-emergency(preparedness and mitigation)
- During emergency(response)
- Post emergency(recovery)
The DCE of Techiman north, Hon. Everson Addo-Donkor including some top management members of the assembly were present to grace the occasion. Hon. Everson Addo-Donkor underscored the need for such programmes and he opined that workshop training, further educational studies and promotions play a critical roles in the success of every organization and department.
In spite of the numerous benefits of such workshops, the major setback has been inadequate finance which has become a peril.
