A devastating bush fire outbreak at Asuyei in the Buoyem Zone of Techiman North District has destroyed approximately 89.5 acres of farmland, leaving scores of farmers counting their losses and raising serious concerns about food security and livelihood sustainability in the affected communities.
The incident, which occurred on January 26, 2026, caused extensive destruction to cocoa and cashew farms across Asuyei and nearby communities such as Aworowa. A joint assessment conducted by NADMO officials together with Agricultural Officers and Cocoa Extension Officers revealed that approximately 78.5 acres of cocoa farms and 11 acres of cashew farms were completely destroyed by the inferno.
The involvement of agricultural and cocoa extension officers provided crucial technical insight into crop loss and recovery prospects during the assessment visit. Affected farmers expressed deep concern over the scale of destruction, as many rely solely on these farms for their livelihoods and have invested significant resources in establishing their plantations.
During the visit, a comprehensive list of all affected farmers was compiled to support documentation and facilitate any future relief or support interventions. The team also reinforced education on fire prevention, including the creation of fire belts, controlled burning practices, and early reporting of fire outbreaks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
NADMO officials have urged farmers to adopt preventive measures and report any signs of fire outbreaks immediately to minimize damage. The district office has also called on relevant agencies to provide support to affected farmers to help them recover from their losses.
